Grenache

Grenache, the King of the Southern Rhône, is one of the world's most widely planted and versatile red grape varieties in the world (also known as Garnacha in Spain, for example). It requires harvesting at full maturity, however, which means wines with high alcohol levels, potentially well in excess of 15% ABV. As such it is more often than not blended with other varieties which are naturally lower in sugar to keep the alcohol level manageable.

These are warming wines with ripe, generous fruit characters, principally cherry and raspberry with spicy notes and garrigue (the wild herbs found in Provence) nand should always be at least medium if not full bodied with fairly soft tannins. The can age well. Grilled meats, stews, cheeses... Grenache is one of the most food friendly wines in the world.
