Clairette

Clairette is a traditional white grape variety from Southern France, particularly the Rhône Valley and Languedoc, increasingly taking centre stage in these regions because of its ability to cope with global warming better than Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, for example. The new white wine appellation for Gigondas requires at least 70% of the blend to be Clairette and an increasing number of white wines from the wider region are made along these lines. Typically, expect freshness and delicate floral aromatics with hints of white flowers and herbs. The wine should offer crisp acidity with bright citrus and green apple flavours with a medium body and refreshing finish. It goes well with seafoods and salads and, in our experience, it can handle spice well - we have enjoyed it with curries and Sichuan foods.
