Roussanne
![]() |
Roussanne is the rich yet elegant white grape of France's Rhône Valley, prized for its rich texture and aromatic complexity. It has long been favoured in the north, along with Marsanne, but in recent years it has gained popularity with winemakers in the south, starting with Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A pre-fermented juice I tried a few years ago had a strong apricot flavour but this gives way to flavours of stone fruit in general, honey, and subtle spice that develop with age. It can age 20 years in some cases. It is the red wine drinkers white wine: rich, full-bodied texture and balanced acidity. It needs food that won't overwhelm it so things like roast chicken or creamy seafood dishes are recommended. |
