Cairanne

After the elevation to cru status of Gigondas in 1971, Cairanne, one of the original four Côtes du Rhône Villages, was long regarded as the best in this category. Wines here can offer exceptional value for money, rarely more than £20 per bottle although notable exceptions do occur, especially where mavericks such as Xavier Vignon are involved. One of the most consistent perfomers has long been Domaine Brusset whose 'Vieilles Vignes' is a superb blend of 50% each Grenache and Syrah, one of our favourites from the region.

Most wines are Grenache based but, as with other wines from the region, Syrah, Mourvèdre and other grapes are permitted and generally included in the blends. White wines are primarily made from Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Viognier.

Cairanne was finally elevated in 2016.
