Cinsault

Cinsault (pronounced San-so) is a versatile red grape variety from the Mediterranean, particularly Southern France where it is used as part of the blend (especially with Grenache) in many red wines and often as the principal variety in rosés. Occasionally it is made as a mono-varietal red; these wines can be especially interesting. Typically, it makes light, fresh flavoured wines with notes of strawberries, raspberries and a little spice, and has a light to medium body, soft tannins and good acidity, nothing too dominant. Indeed, as a blending grape, this is perhaps its greatest strength. It is a wine to enjoy with lighter meals and charcuterie in particular but is generally extremely versatile with food. Note: whereas many of the Southern Rhône reds include Cinsault as part of their blend, this page only lists those wines where it is the principal variety.
