Susumaniello

Susumaniello (the name means "Little Donkey" in Puglian dialect) is a rare and indigenous red grape from Italy's Puglia region, particularly the Salento peninsula. Once nearly extinct, this ancient variety is experiencing a renaissance, especially in the hands of Luigi Rubino. His red wines are deep coloured with rich dark flavours of brambly dark berry and garrigue herb aromas, earthy and spicy notes with black pepper. They are full-bodied with smooth tannins and balanced acidity and pair well with full-flavoured foods including grilled meats, hearty stews, aged cheeses and rustic Italian cuisine.

Tenute Rubino also produce a Rosato Susumaniello with sweet fruit (but not overly so) and plenty of depth, making this one of the most enjoyable rosé wines in our experience.
