Merlot

Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is the great grape of Bordeaux, especially the Right Bank wines of St-Emilion and Pomerol. Throughout the winemaking world it is one of the most popular international grapes along with the other so-called noble varieties (including Cabernet, Syrah, Pinot Noir and, for white wines, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling).

Merlot makes smooth, plummy wines which are generally softer - less tannic - than Cabernet but have potential to age well. Lighter versions are made in areas such as France's Languedoc-Roussillon for everyday enjoyment. It is excellent with roasted meats or duck and semi-hard cheeses.
