Aglianico

The principal grape variety of Southern Italy's red wines and, along with Sangiovese and Nebbiolo (indeed, it is sometimes referred to as the 'Barolo of the South'), one of the country's most noble and age-worthy red grape varieties. It performs best in Basilicata's Aglianico del Vulture or Campania's Taurasi where powerful, structured wines with firm tannins and vibrant acidity are made. They generally have rich dark fruit characters - black cherry, plum and blackberry - with complex notes of leather, tobacco, earth and volcanic minerality, especially grown around Mont Vulture. These wines are best enjoyed with braised meats, game, aged cheeses etc.
