Viognier

The second most planted white grape in the Rhône Valley (after Grenache Blanc), Viognier's spiritual home is Condrieu in the north where it makes some of the most exquisite white wines in the region. Some producers of red Côte Rôtie also use up to 15% blended with the Syrah. In the south it is mainly a blending grape although some estates do bottle a mono-varietal Viognier too. Classically, it has aromas of peach, apricot and honeysuckle, a fairly full bodied texture with a rich, oily mouthfeel and flavours of ripe stone fruit, tropical notes and subtle spice. A difficult wine to pair with many foods (although some would disagree), it is, for me, best on its own.
