A large number of wines are made under generic categories such as Vin de France (VdF), Vin de Pays (VdP), Indication Géographique Protégée (IGP or IGT for their Italian equivalent) and others. These bottlings range from everyday wines to some of the most fascinating wines, those made by mavericks such as Xavier Vignon who like to think outside the box. Another fabulous example is Pierre Gaillard's Asiaticus, from an ancient vineyard recently replanted and awaiting appellation status. These wines punch well above their weight and are often exceptionally good value.
