Tasting Notes: The little-known Gamba di Pernice is named after the way the vine hangs (like partridge legs). It is found mainly in the hills of Monferrato in very limited quantities but is the speciality of the village of Calosso, between Alba and Santo Stefano Belbo (Moscato country). The tiny quantities produced (Grasso makes the best example but only 610 bottles per year) ensure there will never be appellation status for this wine but who really cares? The quality speaks for itself. There is a definitive Piedmontese edge to the slightly sour finish but the wine seems to offer an element of the fuller style familiar to Chianti aficionados. A very pleasurable wine with so much more to offer than its humble denomination suggests. | Drinking Dates: 2020 to 2030 | Cépagement: 100% Gamba di Pernice | Upbringing: Only 610 bottles made each year! | ABV: 14% |
