Tasting Notes: One of the great wines of Gigondas, this is extremely concentrated with long-lasting flavours of blackberry and chocolate with oak and all this well-wrapped by ripe tannins. Even in a rain-sodden vintage like 2002 it is easy to understand why Daniel and Laurent could not resist making this juicy, fruity, oaked wine. The far better 2009 is less marked by oak because of the richer, riper fruit (although the style is apparent). It will take a few years to soften enough to drink well but it will develop very well over the 15 years or more.
A big wine, certainly, but fresh and characterful. Interestingly, Laurent had another bottle which had been open for eight days which showed some of the wine's potential evolution and remarkably little oxidation. A long future for this wine.

Aged in 100% oak casks, around 40% new. | ABV: 14% | Critic Reviews: "This is a large-scaled, full-bodied, big, dense wine with an inky/purple colour as well as notes of graphite, blackberries, blueberries, charcoal and incense and beautifully integrated tannins, acidity and alcohol. One of the superstars of the appellation in 2009, it should evolve for 10-15 years." 93/100 ( Wine Advocate) | Food: Grilled meats or meat cooked in sauces, game and cheeses |
