2019 Rubino Brindisi 'Torre Testa'
      Go Back
Tasting Notes:
From partially-raisined Susumaniello grapes, the nose suggests blackcurrant, sour cherry and notes of liquorice. Tangy, rounded and warming with good acidity. Full yet balanced, there is good ageing potential here. This must be the most interesting wine produced in Brindisi if not the whole of the Salento peninsular.

Drinking Dates:
2025 to 2030+
Cépagement:
100% Susumaniello
Upbringing:
An initial in-field selection by the end of August to ensure greater concentration and healthiness of each individual cluster. The remaining grapes, slightly and naturally dried on the vine, were further handpicked during the harvesting phase in the third decade of September. The fermentation was conducted at a controlled temperature between 24 and 26°C with an extended maceration on the skins to preserve fragrances while achieving both colour and structure. The wine was then refined in French oak barriques.

Critic Reviews:
'If Apulian Susumaniello is enjoying a veritable boom, achieving incredible popularity among consumers worldwide, much of this is due to this company, which, with foresight and exemplary tenacity, has dedicated every possible effort and attention to it for more than twenty years. The awarding of the Tastevin to Torre Testa, a superb red and the forerunner of a series of highly regarded labels, is both a prestigious recognition and a promise for further future success.' Tastevin AIS 2022 (Italian Sommeliers' Award)

'The 2019 Susumaniello Torre Testa blossoms in the glass with an incredibly pretty bouquet, mixing raspberry preserves with dusty rose, clove and spiced orange rinds. This is elegant and enveloping to the senses. Zesty accentuates ripe wild berry fruits and exotic spice. A staining of primary concentration and sweet tannins frame the wine well without slowing its momentum. Cinnamon and dark chocolate hints linger. While quite hedonistic in style, this is a gorgeous and beautifully balanced Susumaniello.' 92/100 ( vinous.com)

'Dark, rich ruby red. On the nose roasted malt, milk chocolate, then fine notes of ripe Amarena cherries and plums, then again with coffee and black pepper. On the palate there’s a great freshness, showing compact fruit sweetness, with a lot of finesse and balanced display, long and clear finish.' 95/100 (Falstaff - tasting: Othmar Kiem, Simon Staffler)

'Impenetrable ruby with bright amaranth highlights. Captivating on the nose, with waves of black cherry, dark cherry, blood orange, medicinal herbs, licorice root, and dark chocolate. A finely textured palate, with velvety tannins and untamed freshness. A peacock-tail finish. Roe deer with blackcurrant sauce.' Vitae AIS 4 Viti (Highest award)
