2008 Domaine Berthoumieu Madiran 'Charles de Batz'
Single Bottles (75cl) @ £14.00

Tasting Notes:
Named after D'Artagnan (Charles de Batz was his real name), this is a fighting wine with its serious tannins which, whilst not as obtrusive as many Madiran wines, need to be thought about when deciding what foods to enjoy with them. Very dark colour, spicy nose and very concentrated palate. Good tannins which complement rare steaks etc. This was my favourite wine at the South-West France table at the London Wine Fair 2009. I had to get it onto the list!
Drinking Dates:
2011 to 2020
90% Tannat, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Vines aged 50 years+. Yields of 40hl/ha.
Chalk and stone
Manual harvest, Grapes are destalked, pressed and put into tanks. Tannat is fermented and macerated over 30 days, Cabernet for 21 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place after the separation of the wine from the lees. Aged for 18 months, including 12 in new oak barrels. Estensive racking is undertaken to tame the wild Tannat tannins.
Critic Reviews:
"Wood aromas still noticeable but the wine has considerable matter and body. A beautiful wine which needs four or five years" 17/20 (RVF)

"Tannat with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this comes from 50-year-old vines and spends 12 months in new barriques. Rich, dark, black plum and olive, very sinewy and tight, with a blue/black richness and edge of woodsmoke, lovely concentration. The palate is dry and savoury, with a tight, meaty intensity and lovely tannin and acid balance that keeps it fresh." 91/100 (Tom Cannavan,

Rare meats - steak, magret de canard etc
