Paternoster, Barile (Basilicata)'One of the foremost wineries in the Vulture region' (The New Italy)
A recent trip to the far south of Italy revealed some fantastic wines that, because of their location, struggle to make their way to the UK. It is our loss. At Barile, in the shadows of Mont Vulture (yes, there are vultures flying around), an extinct volcano dominates the 20 hectare estate, 450-600 metres above sea level, that is Paternoster. Here, some of the most remarkable wines of southern Italy are made. The top - and most expensive - cuvée is named after Don Anselmo, the estate's founder who first bottled Aglianico wines in 1925 although it was Pino, his son, who elevated the estate to its status as one of the leading producers of Aglianico del Vulture. Today, just five wines are made so quality is guaranteed throughout. We cannot emphasise enough the joy of opening a bottle of their "Synthesi" bottling which is one of the best value and absolutely delicious wines we have ever encountered. The white grape here is Falanghina which makes an incredibly citrusy wine. It takes you aback slightly at first but within a couple of mouthfeels, expect to be hooked. Wines have fairly high acidity levels so they age magnificently, retaining freshness, a feature that sets them apart from some other wines from the hot south. They are modern, clean, well-structured wines, true to type and, above all delicious. If you are unfamiliar with Aglianico or Falanghina, this is an excellent place to start; if you do already know these grapes, you won't be disappointed with the wines of Paternoster.
