Podere Casisano, Montalcino
Casisano is found in the picturesque south-eastern corner of Montalcino with views across to Sant’Angelo and the Abbey of Sant’Antimo. The high elevation of the vineyerads (480 metres) ensures quality by guaranteeing natural freshness, elegance and complexity through an extended growing season (together with the southwest exposure ensuring optimal ripening), a constant breeze (helps prevent disease) and slope (natural drainage and deeper roots). Founded as recently as 1990, the estate is isolated and beautifully set, surrounded by thick woods with a road that requires determination to get there. It extends over 53 hectares, 22 of which are vineyards (including nine for Brunello wines and seven for Rosso di Montalcino – the remainder is for the Sant’Antimo denomination). The only grape cultivated here is Sangiovese Grosso, planted at 4-5,000 vines per hectare, yielding an average of 7,000kg per hectare. The wines are among the more elegant Brunellos, wonderful to enjoy at a modestly young age but certainly capable of ageing well.
