Tasting Notes: From the highest point of the appellation. this is concentrated, smooth, rounded and generous. Liquid velvet. Exceptional. Tannins about so decanting is recommended. Wow!
Tasted again 30/01/2019, it is thick with tannins at first but not impenetrably so and the fruit needs a short while to integrate fully but it is an incredibly young bottle for this class of wine. After about an hour, the balance has improved (which suggests to me that another 2-5 years would really help the uncorked bottle!) and the fruit has taken on another dimension. No longer backwards, the black fruit is joined with hints of so many things impossible to describe in perfect detail. What complexity. What joy!
All wines from this estate | Drinking Dates: 2020 to 2030 | Cépagement: 50% Grenache, 25% each Syrah and Mourvèdre (50-year-old vines) | Upbringing: 18 month elevage in 80% in concrete and 20% in older barrels. | ABV: 14% | Critic Reviews: "Another wine that's not for those craving instant gratification, the 2015 Gigondas Secrets de Montmirail offers tight, reserved and backwards notes of scorched earth, black fruits and crushed rocks in its full-bodied, structured profile. The tannin is ripe but certainly present and it needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years." 91-94/100 ( Wine Advocate) | Food: Fillet of beef |
