Tasting Notes: Intense, mouth filling but still stylish and elegant wine from the highest parcel of Brusset's vines (indeed, any Gigondas producer's vines) in the heights of the Dentelles de Montmirail, a stunning rock formation which looks like jagged teeth (although 'Dentelles' actually means lacework) just outside the village. Black fruits take the edge over the reds and there is a touch of vanilla spice from the barrels. Good lift from the acidity. Simply (or not so simply) delicious.
All wines from this estate | Drinking Dates: 2020 to 2030+ | Cépagement: Syrah and Grenache | Upbringing: 18 month elevage in 80% in concrete and 20% in older barrels. | ABV: 14% | Critic Reviews: 'Brusset's top wine is the 2016 Gigondas Les Secrets de Montmirail, a 60-40 blend of Grenache and Syrah from just three small terraces high in the Dentelles, with the Syrah component aged in wood. It's cedary and vanilla-scented, but those qualities are matched by concentrated black cherries. Full-bodied, plush and loaded with soft tannins, it picks up lovely notes of baking spices, cracked pepper and licorice on the long finish. Ideally, give this a couple of years in the cellar. Some might consider this too modern or international, but it's just so darn delicious' 95/100 ( Wine Advocate)
Black fruit with fine, drying, dusty tannins. Peppery and spicy on the finish. Structural yet there is still lightness to the body. Powerful yet nuanced. Really deserves age. Surprisingly subtle for the standard expectations of the south.' 17++/20 (Jancis Robinson MW) |
