Tasting Notes: Pierre Gaillard only uses Roussanne for his St Joseph Blanc (rather than the more usual blend with Marsanne) as this variety, in conjunction with the very low yields, produces wines with greater aromatic complexity and good richness of fruit. There is also good minerality. Quite ageworthy.
All wines from this estate | Drinking Dates: 2022 to 2027 | Cépagement: 100% Roussanne (25hl/ha) from 2.3ha around Chavanay and Malleval. | Soil: Fine sand composed of detrital granite. | Upbringing: Handpicked harvest, grapes sorted. Alcoholic fermentation in barrels. Controlled temperatures (15-18°C). Malolactic fermentation in barrels.
Aged 7 to 8 months in 5% new oak from Allier and Nevers with regular stirring of the lees to enrich the wine and bring out the minerality. | ABV: 14% | Critic Reviews: 'Custard apple and attractive green notes on the nose with almond and quince. Lovely texture and pithy notes with a good sense of freshness and direction, lively refreshing and really good fruit core. Pure and pretty.' 17/20, Alistair Cooper MW ( jancisrobinson.com)
'Light bright yellow. Expressive aromas of ripe orchard and pit fruits, along with a hint of chamomile in the background. Chewy peach and yellow apple flavors are complemented by a sweetening touch of honey. A bitter orange pith note adds bite and lift to the finish, which hangs on with good tenacity.' 90/100 (vinous.com) |
