Saint Cosme claims to be the oldest vineyard in the region and, certainly, there is documentation to show that it existed in 1416  when Jean de Chalon, Prince of Orange granted "land for the planting of vines on the Saint Cosme slopes." Louis Barruol's ancestors acquired it in 1570, and at the end of the sixteenth century built a splendid residence over existing cellars. Louis became the fourteenth generation at the 15 hectare estate when he took over from his grandfather in 1992.

As well as his excellent estate wines, Louis has since 1997 produced a range of extremely fine wines from the Northern Rhône (Côte Rôtie, St Joseph and Condrieu) from carefully selected purchased grapes grown in some of the best parts of these appellations.
